Sound Advice
Editing software like Final Cut Pro allows you put sound on different
tracks and move a piece of sound back and forth in time until it
syncs properly with the picture or other sounds. When shooting Trifling
with Fate I set the camera to record audio (from its built-in microphone)
at 48kHz, and I set the DAT to record at 48kHz. Once I synced the
sound of a take during editing I found I could sync it at any point
in the take, and it stayed in sync with no problem using the process
below.
Sound Logic
Over the last several years, film sound has changed with the advent
of digital technology -but not as much as you might think. What
used to be a fairly simple process with extremely limited tools
by which the best work was achieved through creativity, long hours
and hard work has become a fairly complicated process using tools
of incredible power and flexibility by which the best work is still
achieved through creativity, long hours and hard work.
Quite often when independent filmmakers are developing their scripts,
the do not give consideration is given to sound-film is seen only
as a visual medium, and sound becomes an afterthought. But remember:
No one leaves the theater whistling a two-shot.
