TVideo technology is advancing by leaps and bounds. It is now
possible to shoot PAL Digibeta footage that transfers superbly to
35mm film, and the high-definition 24-frames-per-second video camera
is a reality. So why shoot miniDV, the "prosumer" medium
favored by both home-movie makers as well as the first wave of digital
independents?
MiniDV both tempts and forces us to work in so many new ways that
it becomes a new medium, distinct from both film and its higher-definition
counterparts. When we aren't using miniDV to imitate film, it opens
up new aesthetic possibilities. Equally important, it also offers
us a way to rethink some of what is worst about how we usually make
movies.
